The short version

One system that treats the water for your whole home

A pitcher filter or a single under-sink cartridge only cleans one faucet. A whole-house system treats the water where it enters your home, so every shower, every load of laundry, and every glass from the tap gets the same clean water. In Massachusetts that matters more than most people realize, because what comes out of the tap is shaped by your specific town supply or private well, not by a statewide average.

CleanTap is a water company first. We start with a free in-home test to find out exactly what you are dealing with, then design a system around those results. Sometimes that is a simple carbon filter for chlorine and taste. Sometimes it is a multi-stage setup for a well with iron and sediment, or targeted media for PFAS. What we will never do is sell you a system bigger than your water actually needs.

What it removes

What a whole-house system takes out of your water

🧊

Chlorine & chloramine

Most MA municipal supplies are disinfected with chlorine or chloramine. Carbon filtration removes the chemical taste and smell at every tap.

⚗️

PFAS “forever chemicals”

Massachusetts regulates six PFAS compounds at 20 parts per trillion. We install certified media that reduces PFAS at the point of entry. More on PFAS treatment.

💧

Hard-water minerals

Calcium and magnesium cause scale, spotting, and dry skin. Pair filtration with a softener to protect your plumbing and appliances.

🟩

Sediment & rust

Sand, silt, and rust particles cloud your water and wear out fixtures. A sediment stage catches them before they reach your pipes.

🔥

Iron & manganese

Common in MA well water, these cause orange and black staining. We treat them at the source. See iron & manganese removal.

🔬

Taste & odor

That earthy or metallic taste has a cause. We identify it in your test and match the media that clears it up.

What it costs

Whole-house filtration cost in Massachusetts

Most whole-house systems in Massachusetts land between $1,500 and $4,500 installed, depending on what your water needs and how many stages it takes to get there. Here are the typical 2026 ranges. Your free water test tells us which one fits, and you get one fixed price before any work begins.

SystemTypical installed rangeBest for
Carbon filter (chlorine & taste)$1,500–$2,800City water, taste & odor
Filter + softener combo$2,800–$4,500Hard water plus filtration
Well water multi-stage$2,500–$4,500Iron, sediment, odor
PFAS reduction media$2,500–$4,500Confirmed PFAS in supply

Ranges include standard installation. Specialty media, tight mechanical spaces, or well pressure work can affect the final number. We quote one fixed price up front.

Do you need one?

Signs your home would benefit

You do not need a whole-house system just because. But if you notice any of these, a test is worth your time, and it is free:

Chlorine smell or taste

If your water smells like a pool or tastes off, carbon filtration clears it up fast.

White scale on fixtures

Crusty buildup on faucets and shower glass is hard water shortening the life of your appliances.

Orange or black staining

Rust-colored sinks or dark specks point to iron and manganese, common in MA wells.

Dry skin and dull laundry

Hard water leaves skin itchy and clothes stiff and faded no matter the detergent.

You are on a private well

Wells are not tested by any town. Whatever is in the ground is in your water until you treat it.

PFAS in your town report

If your public supply has flagged PFAS, point-of-entry treatment protects every tap.

How it works

From free test to clean water

3

Clean, code install

Our licensed team installs at your main line, ties it in cleanly, and leaves the space tidy, usually in a single visit.

4

We show you the easy maintenance and can handle filter changes for you, so the system keeps working for years.

Local knowledge

Why Massachusetts water needs a closer look

Massachusetts has some of the strictest drinking-water rules in the country, including an enforceable limit of 20 parts per trillion for six PFAS compounds. But a town meeting its legal average tells you very little about the water reaching your specific home, through your pipes, on your street. Older neighborhoods around Boston and the South Shore still have aging service lines, and communities on the SouthCoast and out toward the western suburbs lean heavily on private wells that nobody tests but the owner.

That is why we start every job with a test instead of a sales sheet. A home in a town on municipal water usually needs chlorine and PFAS attention, while a well home a few miles away may be fighting iron, sediment, and hardness instead. Same region, completely different water. Treating it right means measuring it first, then building the system to match.

Questions

Whole-house water filtration FAQs

How much does a whole-house water filter cost in Massachusetts?

Most systems run about $1,500 to $2,800 for a carbon filter that handles chlorine and taste, $2,800 to $4,500 for a filter-and-softener combo, and $2,500 to $4,500 for a multi-stage well system or PFAS media. Your free water test tells us which one fits, and we give you a fixed price before we start.

Whole-house filter or under-sink system, which do I need?

An under-sink or reverse osmosis system cleans one faucet for drinking and cooking. A whole-house system treats every tap, shower, and appliance. Many MA homes use both: whole-house for chlorine, sediment, and hardness, plus a reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink for the purest drinking water.

Will a whole-house filter remove PFAS?

The right media will. PFAS reduction requires certified carbon or ion-exchange media designed for it. We confirm PFAS with your test first, then size the system to reduce it at your main line. Learn more on our PFAS treatment page.

Does a whole-house filter soften water too?

Not by itself. Filtration removes chlorine, chemicals, and particles, while a softener removes the calcium and magnesium that cause scale. If your water is hard, we often pair the two. Your test shows whether you need softening.

Is the water test really free?

Yes, completely. We test your water in your home, explain the results in plain language, and there is no obligation to buy anything. It is the honest starting point for any water decision.

How often do the filters need changing?

It depends on the system and your water, but most whole-house media runs from several months to a few years between service. We show you what to watch for and can handle the changes for you on a schedule.

Do I need a special system for well water?

Usually, yes. Well water often carries iron, manganese, sediment, and sometimes odor that city water does not. We build a multi-stage system for wells and treat each issue in the right order. See our well water treatment page.

What areas do you serve?

We install across Greater Boston, the South Shore, the SouthCoast, and much of Eastern Massachusetts from our Braintree and Mansfield bases. If you are nearby, we can usually get out quickly for your free test.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We offer $0-down financing with simple monthly payments so clean water fits your budget. Ask us and we will lay out the options with no pressure.
