Massachusetts has some of the strictest drinking-water rules in the country. In 2020 the state set an enforceable limit of 20 parts per trillion for six PFAS “forever chemicals” (PFAS6), and has since identified PFAS above that limit in public water systems across the Commonwealth. But a town meeting its legal average tells you nothing about the water coming out of your tap, in your home, through your pipes.
The independent EWG Tap Water Database records many Massachusetts systems carrying contaminants, PFAS, arsenic, disinfection byproducts like trihalomethanes, and manganese, at levels above EWG’s health-based guidelines, which are stricter than the legal limits. On top of that, hard water is widespread across the state, older homes can still have lead in service lines and fixtures, and private wells aren’t regulated or tested by anyone but you.
